Tikal, Guatemala

We were awed as we entered the Grand Plaza. Temple I, called the Temple of the Grand Jaguar, was probably built around 700 AD. It was the first of the many buildings discovered at Tikal. This building was one of the major centers of the Mayan culture of its day and was the burial location of a Mayan king. His wife was buried in Temple II, across the Grand Plaza. The Mayans were very knowledgeable about astronomy and constructed these temples so that the shadow from Temple I fell exactly on Temple II at sunrise on the summer solstice.
